Most protocols are identified by acronyms. While the acronyms typically also stand for a complete phrase, computer professionals are much more likely to use the acronyms as words in their own right, without necessarily knowing what the letters originally stood for.

Because the acronyms are widely used, it is often more beneficial to learn the acronym as a stand-alone word, rather than focusing and the words the letters represent.
